Suspended ceilings turn up in almost every office refurbishment quote, and plenty of people accept them without ever asking why. Sometimes they are genuinely the right answer; other times you are paying to hide services that would look better exposed, or losing 300mm of height you cannot spare. Here is how to work out which situation you are in.
A grid and tile ceiling is really a service void with a lid. It gives you somewhere to run cabling, ductwork, sprinkler pipework and lighting, and it lets you get at all of it later by lifting a tile rather than cutting into plasterboard. In a fitted-out office where things change every couple of years, that access is worth a lot.
The tiles themselves do work too. A standard mineral fibre tile absorbs sound rather than bouncing it around, which matters in an open-plan space with hard floors and glass partitions. If you have ever sat in a room where every phone call feels like it is happening at your desk, a bare soffit is usually part of the reason.
Height is the first thing to check. A suspended ceiling typically eats 150mm to 400mm depending on what is running above it. In a lot of the older units around Harlow and the Templefields and Pinnacles estates, the floor to soffit is already tight, and dropping it further makes a small office feel like a corridor. Measure before you commit.
The second consideration is the look. Exposed services with the soffit sprayed black or white has stopped being a tech-startup affectation and is now a normal choice, and it can save you money on the ceiling while costing you some on acoustics and on tidying the services so they are fit to be seen. If you go that route, budget for acoustic rafts or wall panels; without them the space will be noisy.
There is also the halfway house: a plasterboard MF ceiling. It gives you a clean, seamless, paintable finish that looks far better than tiles in a reception or a director's office, and you can drop access panels in where you need them. It is less flexible and costs more per square metre, but for front-of-house areas it usually earns its keep.
As a rough guide, a standard 600 x 600 grid with mineral fibre tiles in a straightforward open space tends to land somewhere around 25 to 45 pounds per square metre supplied and fitted, before lighting. Enhanced acoustic tiles, concealed grid, moisture-resistant tiles for kitchens and washrooms, or a fire-rated build-up push that up. Small rooms cost more per square metre than large ones, because the perimeter trim and the setting out are the fiddly part.
The bigger variables are usually not the ceiling. Working out of hours because the office is occupied, forming bulkheads around beams, coordinating with the M&E contractor's programme, and cutting in dozens of downlights and grilles all add time. Ask for those to be itemised so you can see what you are actually paying for.
If your office is part of a larger building or sits above or below another tenancy, the ceiling may be doing a fire compartmentation job, and you cannot simply swap it for something else. Likewise, penetrating a fire-rated ceiling for new lights needs fire hoods. Building Regulations Part B and Part E are the relevant ones, and an alteration to a ceiling in a shared building will usually need a Building Control application through Harlow Council or an approved inspector.
If you lease the space, check the fit-out provisions and your dilapidations liability. Landlords quite often specify a particular grid or tile so the building reads consistently, and taking a ceiling out can leave you reinstating it at the end of the term. A five-minute look at the lease saves a lot of argument later.
For a typical single-floor office of 200 to 300 square metres, the grid and tiles are usually a week to ten days, assuming the space is clear and the services above are already in. Lighting and final tile cutting normally follow once the electrician has finished.

A little, because you are heating a smaller volume, but tiles are not insulation and the void above is usually still within the heated envelope. If heating costs are the real concern, insulation at roof level and better door seals will do far more.
